Irish Foresters   - James Nicholas
The Irish National Foresters were one of many Friendly Societies that operated in Melbourne and across Australia. Formed in Melbourne in 1886 by Irish migrants it provided all the usual benefits that were standard across the Friendly Societies such as medical, income protection, funeral protection etc. To be a member you had to be Irish or of Irish descent and the social activities included Irish music and dance as well as language classes and then Hurling and Gaelic football teams.
Branches operated across Melbourne suburbs and were strongest in Irish dominated suburbs like Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood, West and North Melbourne etc.
The INF very early compared to many similar groups introduced female only branches then they became mixed, and eventually the leadership of branches and the state executive were often run by female members.
Like all the Friendly Societies their dominance was broken by federal and state government legislation post World War 2 that provided many of the benefits that only these societies had provided and the INF was in decline by the early 1960s and this continued until its demise in 1986.
With many INF members and leaders prominent across not only Irish circles but council, politics and many other fields this insight into the INF provides a perspective never written about before.

Monday 16 March, 10am:   - Richmond Town Hall
Walk : Richmond Town Hall Precinct.
The development of Richmond was centred around the Richmond Town Hall. The location provided a vital meeting place and enabled many connections between the community groups. Dances, meetings, presentations and discussions helped to shape the development and growth of Richmond. The location included the Court House, The Post Office and nearby the early police station and jail. Surrounding the Town Hall were picture theatres, bowling club, swimming pool, primary and secondary schools, gas works and sporting facilities. The Gleadell Street Market  is the latest evolution of the Richmond Market and the Kerb Market.  There are still remnants of WW2 to be found. The walk is about one and a half hours and is on flat ground. Booking through Yarra Libraries.

Collecting Ephemera:  Mandy Bede
Amanda is the President of the Ephemera Society of Australia.
Amanda became interested in ephemera when she started work at the State Library of Victoria in the 1980s.
They collected all sorts of printed material including ephemera. Through my work collecting contemporary political and social ephemera, I got to know the Ephemera Society and I have been interested and sometimes obsessed with these records of ordinary life.  The diversity of collections and memorabilia are an amazing history of products, and services over the decades.
